"Just as we trust Americans with their own money, we need to earn their trust by spending their tax dollars wisely. Next week, I'll send you a budget that terminates or substantially reduces 151 wasteful or bloated programs, totaling more than $18 billion. The budget that I will submit will keep America on track for a surplus in 2012. American families have to balance their budgets; so should their government." -George W. Bush in his 2008 State of the Union delivery.
"President Bush unveiled a $3.1 trillion budget on Monday that supports sizable increases in military spending to fight the war on terrorism and protects his signature tax cuts. Bush says the plan will keep the U.S. economy growing and protect the U.S. militarily." -AP (via NY Times) 2/4/08.

Isn't that a record setting budget?
Same thing with his troop math.
"These successes must continue, so we're adding 3,200 Marines to our forces in Afghanistan, where they will fight the terrorists and train the Afghan Army and police."
OK. More troops...
"The government in Baghdad has stepped forward, as well -- adding more than 100,000 new Iraqi soldiers and police during the past year."
Factcheck.org-
"It’s certainly worth pointing out that at least 60,000 of the Iraqi citizens to which Bush refers – they’re called "Concerned Local Citizens" by the U.S. military – are under contract with the U.S. military and being paid about $300 a month."
"As part of this transition, one Army brigade combat team and one Marine Expeditionary Unit have already come home and will not be replaced. In the coming months, four additional brigades and two Marine battalions will follow suit. Taken together, this means more than 20,000 of our troops are coming home."
162,000 troops at peak in June - 20,000 troops over seven months = 142,000 Roughly
142,000 troops > 130,000 Roughly there in February 2007 when the surge began.
So while Bush boasts about troops finally coming home as if it is his accomplishment, there are still MORE troops than last year. Not to mention more going to Afghanistan. I couldn't have imagined escalation ever being twisted into reduction, but they never cease to amaze me.
Why do the powers that be in our government not believe that the people will wise up and realize that this shit doesn't make any sense? Maybe that's not the case, they know that some folks will figure it out, but we just don't have the ability to do anything. I don't know.
